Sometimes I come across numbers that truely shock me, for which I can only blame my own naivety and ignorance. Standing aside, for a moment, from Mr O'Brien's excellent analysis, the base facts here are that abortions run at about 1 in 4 to 1 in 3. Does that stun and appal you as it does me?

Interesting, but there’s not much evidence here that there is a sizeable group of women who don’t really want to have an abortion but would prefer it to eventually giving up their baby for adoption. And, even amongst that group, it seems plausible that many would prefer this *in principle*, rather than because of the specifics of the care and adoption systems as they currently stand
